To better serve our customers, we realize that it starts with knowledge and passion for what we do. As an example of this commitment, we recently took our wine specialist, Rene Parks and our Operations Manager, James Moran on an educational excursion to Napa Valley, California.

Pictured outside of Merryvale is Rene and James with the president of Westborn Market, Mark Anusbigian. During this visit our team was exposed to Merryvale's full product portfolio, their unique harvesting and wine making techniques and a glimpse into the future of the winery. All of this first-hand knowledge allows us to better educate our guests as they look to our experts for recommendations and guidance in their wine purchasing decisions.

Apples are Michigan’s largest and most valuable fruit crop, with a value of about $100 million annually to the apple grower. Value-added marketing and processing enhance the economic contribution of Michigan Apples up to $700 million of economic impact annually.
There are over 7.5 million apple trees in commercial production, covering 37,000 acres, on 950 family-run farms throughout Michigan’s Lower Peninsula.
Michigan harvested approximately 903 million pounds (21.5 million bushels) of apples in 2006.
Apples are by far the largest fruit crop grown in Michigan. Michigan produced approximately 1.4 billion pounds of fruit in 2005 including apples, tart cherries, sweet cherries, blueberries, peaches, grapes, strawberries, pears and plums. One of the longest established sweet cherry programs in the world is alive and well in Summerland, British Columbia. It continues to have a solid, world-wide reputation of developing large, firm sweet cherry varieties covering a range of maturities. Growers and nurseries from around the world seek out the advanced selections and varieties produced at Summerland for testing and evaluation under their local conditions. Red Haven is the all-time favorite of peach lovers for both canning and eating fresh. They are freestone, which means that the fruit comes free from the stone when peeled.

Peaches are an important part of Michigan’s agricultural economy. Michigan ranks sixth in the nation for peach production. Over 430 fruit raising farms form the Michigan peach industry, which contributes over $11 million to the state’s economy. Peaches are rich in potassium, a vital element for both healthy blood and bones.

Other areas of the country may grow more of this fruit than we do here, but nothing compares with the flavor of Michigan peaches. About the Recall-
R.A.M. Produce Distributors of Detroit, Michigan, Franzella Distributing of San Francisco, CA, and United Food Service of East Point, GA have recalled 772 cartons of onions because of possible Salmonella contamination.

The iced green jumbo onions were produced by California-based NewStar Fresh Foods under the Omo and Fu Choy brand names. The onions are packaged in a 48-count iced carton, item numbers 02487403 and 02487452, product lot numbers 40550707 and 40510707, with production dates of July 20th and July 21st 2009.

Michigan's Own Creamy Zucchini and Garlic

Ingredients list:

6 medium Michigan Zucchini, grated.
6 Michigan Garlic cloves, minced.
2 ½ tablespoons of butter.
2 ½ tablespoons of garlic powder.
2 ½ tablespoons of sour cream.
1 teaspoon of thyme leaves, chopped.
Fresh pepper.

Instructions for Creamy Zucchini and Garlic:

Melt the butter in a skillet.
Add the minced garlic and saute over low heat for a short time.
Add the grated zucchini, garlic power and thyme.
Cook, stirring frequently until the zucchini is tender.
Remove from the heat and stir in the sour cream.
Season with the fresh pepper.
Serve.

Lettuce Recalled Due To Salmonella Risk

A major California lettuce grower has recalled about 22,000 cartons of romaine lettuce over concerns that the product may be tainted with salmonella.
Tanimura & Antle Inc. of Salinas issued the voluntary recall Wednesday for cartons of bulk or wrapped romaine marked with the lot code 531380.

The lettuce was harvested between June 25 and July 2, and sold to retail, wholesale and food service outlets across the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico.

Currently ALL Westborn Market Romaine Lettuce is purchased from Local Michigan Farmers. Our Red Romaine Lettuce is from California but, from D' Arrigo Bros. Company of California which is NOT the same grower as the grower involved with the current recall.

We here in the great state of Michigan have been harvesting sweet corn for a month now, and thanks to the goodly growing season we experience in the great lakes state, we'll continue to see it harvested for another two months! Now that's fresh!

Selection and Care:
When buying corn, choose ears with medium-sized kernels. Very small kernels are immature, and large kernels have a starchy taste, rather than a sweet one. The husk of the corn should be moist and green. Leaving husks on when storing corn preserves the flavor. At room temperature the glucose in corn will convert to starch in as little as 24 hours. Therefore, refrigeration of this vegetable is critical for maintaining freshness.

Michigan produced over 10,000 acres of sweet-corn in the year 2000 for fresh consumption alone?
One ear of corn averages 800 kernels in 16 rows. A pound of corn consists of approximately 1,300 kernels?

Flat, Sweet and Happy - The Donut Peach

These squat, white-fleshed peaches are called by many names nowadays. You may hear them referred to as Donuts, Saturns or Saucers. They are descended from the flat peaches of China and were first grown in America in the late 1800s. They generally run up to 3 1/2 inches in diameter with a flat, round look that draws down and in at the center. The skin will be a pale yellow with a red blush. You can judge ripeness on this peach from both touch and smell. The aroma will increase as it nears perfection and the skin will yield when you squeeze it. I find that you don't want to let this fruit get too soft but should eat it when it begins to give to your touch but still has some firmness. These unique white peaches will be succulent and sweet. They will continue to get better as we go forward into July. Enjoy them for they are a taste of the wonderful California summer!
